My interest in cake making began about 10 years ago, when my children were very young. It started with simple teatime treats and birthday cakes. I was dedicated to my career in healthcare but opportunities for artistic expression were limited and I discovered a new outlet through my new hobby. After a few years of baking and sugar crafting for friends and family, I decided to further my skills and attend a cake decorating course. From the very first class I was hooked and never looked back!
The cake decorating course gave me an insight into the world of wedding cakes and this has been my main interest ever since. It was my tutor who really gave me the encouragement and confidence to progress to the next level. So, in early 2010, when circumstances fell into place, I took the plunge and exhibited at my first wedding fair. I left my nursing career behind and focused on self-teaching: learning how to hand pipe; making sugar flowers; testing recipes; building a business framework. With hard work and determination, Cake Couture has grown steadily into the successful, established business it is today.
My main inspiration is nature in all it’s colour and form, although I’m equally drawn to contemporary design. Like a magpie, anything that shimmers or shines appeals to me and my decorating style reflects these things.
Getting married is (mostly!) such an exciting and happy time and being involved with couples as they plan their weddings is a real privilege. Seeing everything come together on the wedding day and adding the finishes touches to the cake gives me enormous satisfaction. And of course, the post-wedding ‘thank-you’s‘ make all the hard work worthwhile.
